SRINAGAR, Nov 3 (Agencies): Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Tariq Hamid Karra on Tuesday said Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi would have carefully assessed the consequences before deciding to resign as Srinagar MP and leave the National Conference (NC).

Speaking to reporters in Jammu, Karra termed Ruhullah’s decision a personal one, saying it was for him to decide his political course.

He said the move appeared to stem from differences in political and ideological positions between Ruhullah and the NC leadership.

Karra expressed confidence that the National Conference would be able to address the differences within its ranks, including the discontent among some party legislators following the recent Cabinet expansion.

He also said the Congress would continue to support the NC whenever it faced a challenge from the BJP.

Reiterating his party’s position on Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, Karra said the Congress would continue to press for its restoration through protests and other political programmes.
