JAMMU. May 29: Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) Jammu sub centre celebrated World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) today.
This day is celebrated to commemorate the founding of the International Telecommunication Union way back in 1865. In 2006 the ITU decided to celebrate the 17th May, World Telecommunication and Information Society day to focus on the importance of Information and communication Technology (ICT).
Welcoming all the participants, and eminent speakers, Dr. Vijay Sharma, Chairman IETE Jammu Centre, elaborated on the importance of this day, he said that the theme is given by ITU is “Digital life lines: Strengthening resilience in a connected world”. Since IETE, is a leading professional institution to serve students, Govt., non Govt, organisations as a pivotal agency in the area of latest technology. Electronics field is progressing very fast and that’s why students are given latest inputs to keep them abreast with the latest technologies.

Prof. Parveen Lehana H.O.D Department of Electronics university of Jammu was the key note speaker and delivered an insightful speech on this year’s theme “Digital life lines: Strengthening resilience in a connected world”. He said that WTISD highlights the growing role of digital technologies and resilient digital infrastructure is the foundation of a connected world.
He emphasized the importance of building resilient digital networks to ensure equitable access to technology for all communities.
Maj Gen SK Sharma, (Retd), Senior Fellow of IETE spoke on the occasion that the data communication in today’s world riddled with uncertainties.
Undersea fibre-optic cables which transmit 99percent data between continents could be snapped by countries at wars and even satellite communication is not safe. In those cases, there is a need to develop parallel standby communication systems as being done in defence forces.
Prof. Pawanesh Abrol, FIETE, an experienced Professor at Jammu University listed out all the computer technologies and how AI useful for day to day life.
He highlighted that proper infrastructure may be provided to school level so that students should get more benefit since AI subject has been started from primary level. While delivering his speech he said that technology can only achieve its true potential when it is inclusive.
Prof. Rakesh Vaid, FIETE and an expert in electronics stressed the need for the students understand the basics of electronics before going in for the coding of the microchips.
He said that Integrated circuits are the back bone of electronics and highlighted the applications of IC. He also highlighted how telecom networks act as a life lines in times of crises and everyday life so our digital networks are the absolutely lifelines of our communities and economies networks.
