JAMMU, Aug 10: Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College, Jammu, organised a comprehensive awareness programme under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan with the objective of sensitising students about the harmful consequences of drug abuse and motivating them to become active ambassadors of a drug-free society.
The programme was organised by the Department of Zoology and NCORD Committee, GGM Science College, in collaboration with the Brahma Kumaris Ashram, Rehari, Jammu.
The programme featured an awareness lecture, an impactful skit and a pledge-taking ceremony, providing students with an engaging platform to understand the physical, psychological, social and academic consequences of substance abuse.
The activities emphasised the importance of making informed choices, developing a healthy lifestyle and collectively working towards the vision of a Nasha Mukt Bharat.
The programme commenced with an interaction with the students, followed by an insightful awareness lecture delivered by Sister Vaneeta and her associate from Brahma Kumaris Ashram, Rehari, Jammu. Through an effective and thought-provoking presentation, the speakers highlighted the devastating impact of drug addiction on individuals, families and society.
They particularly stressed the importance of self-discipline, positive thinking, emotional well-being and constructive engagement of young people in preventing substance abuse.
The interactive session encouraged students to reflect upon the growing challenge of drug addiction and the responsibility of the younger generation in addressing it.
The speakers also emphasised that prevention, awareness and timely support are crucial components in combating substance abuse. The students were encouraged to stay away from addictive substances and to motivate their peers and communities to adopt healthy and productive lifestyles.
A socially relevant skit was also presented during the programme. Through a powerful portrayal of the consequences of drug addiction, the skit conveyed the message that substance abuse not only affects the individual but also causes serious emotional, social and economic hardships for families. The performance was appreciated by the gathering and effectively reinforced the central message of the campaign.
Addressing the students, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Romesh Kumar Gupta appreciated the efforts of the Department of Zoology, NCORD Committee and Brahma Kumaris Ashram for organising the awareness programme. He emphasised that educational institutions have a crucial role in creating awareness among young people and fostering a healthy, responsible and drug-free generation. He urged the students to act as responsible citizens and actively contribute to the national campaign against substance abuse.
Prof. Bal Krishan also addressed the gathering and highlighted the significance of collective efforts in preventing drug abuse. He stressed that awareness programmes become more effective when students actively participate and carry the message beyond the classroom into their families and communities.
Dr. Rahul Kait, Convener, NCORD Committee and Head, Department of Zoology, while addressing the students, underscored the need for sustained awareness and preventive interventions against substance abuse. He stated that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan is not merely a campaign but a collective responsibility, requiring active participation from educational institutions, students, parents, civil society and the community at large. He called upon the students to become responsible ambassadors of the drug-free movement and to promote positive alternatives such as sports, academics, cultural activities, community service and healthy social engagement.
The programme culminated with a pledge against drug abuse, administered to the students and participants. The pledge reaffirmed the commitment of the participants to remain free from intoxicating substances, discourage drug abuse and contribute towards building a healthier and safer society.
A significant number of faculty members and students participated in the programme, reflecting the college’s continued commitment to the objectives of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. The initiative also strengthened the collaboration between the college and the Brahma Kumaris Ashram in promoting values of self-discipline, healthy living and social responsibility among the youth.
Faculty members from the Department of Zoology present on the occasion included Dr. Brinder Kumar, Dr. Nitasha Swahany, Dr. Sheetu Raina, Dr. Reetika Rani, Dr. Rohit Bhardwaj, Dr. Sapna, Dr. Sumera, Dr. Jyoti and Dr. Raksha.
The programme concluded with a renewed commitment by the college community to continue organising awareness and outreach activities aimed at creating a healthy, responsible and drug-free youth, thereby contributing meaningfully to the larger vision of a Nasha Mukt Bharat.
