THANNAMANDI, Oct 31: In connection with the nationwide observance of Vigilance Awareness Week, Government Degree College Thannamandi organised a special lecture on the theme “Probity for Prosperity” under the patronage and guidance of the College Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Shamim Ahmed Azad. The programme was organised by the Cultural and Literary Activity Committee in collaboration with the YEP Committee, with the objective of sensitising students and faculty members to the significance of integrity, transparency, accountability and ethical conduct in fostering good governance and national development as envisioned by the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The programme was presided over by the Officiating Principal of the College, Dr. Nazakat Hussain, who, in his presidential remarks, emphasised that honesty and integrity must become guiding principles in every walk of life. He observed that building a corruption-free society begins with individual accountability, moral responsibility and the sincere practice of ethical values in everyday conduct. He encouraged students to uphold these principles and contribute towards a transparent and prosperous nation.

Dr. Latief Ahmed Lone, Lecturer in Political Science, delivered the keynote address on the theme “Probity for Prosperity.” In his comprehensive and thought-provoking lecture, he elaborated upon the responsibilities of citizens, public representatives, policymakers and institutions in establishing an honest, transparent and development-oriented society. He explained that probity, which encompasses honesty, moral uprightness, transparency and adherence to ethical principles, is an indispensable prerequisite for good governance, public trust and national prosperity.

Dr. Lone highlighted that corruption not only undermines democratic institutions and weakens public confidence but also creates serious obstacles to equitable development, social justice and economic progress. He stressed that a developed and prosperous nation cannot be built solely through economic advancement or infrastructural expansion; it also requires morally responsible citizens who uphold integrity, fairness and transparency in their everyday conduct and decision-making. Every citizen, irrespective of their position or profession, has a responsibility to resist corrupt practices, promote accountability and contribute positively to the larger interests of society. Addressing the student community, he encouraged young people to embrace honesty as a guiding principle, reject unethical shortcuts and recognise their individual responsibility in shaping the future of the nation.

Dr. Gulshan Rashid, Convener of the Cultural and Literary Activity Committee, highlighted the significance of vigilance through practical examples from everyday life. He observed that religious beliefs and rituals alone cannot eradicate the menace of corruption unless individuals possess an honest conscience and genuine moral integrity. He emphasised that true honesty must come from within and find expression in one’s conduct, choices and responsibilities.
