KATHUA, Aug 31: Government Degree College (GDC) Kathua organised a Youth Engagement and Empowerment Programme under the aegis of the college’s SVEEP Cell, featuring an essay writing competition on the theme “Role of Youth in Democracy.”
The programme was aimed at sensitising students about the importance of youth participation in the democratic process and encouraging them to become responsible and active citizens. As many as 15 students participated in the essay writing competition and expressed their views on the role of youth in strengthening democracy and promoting democratic values.
The programme was organised under the guidance of Principal Dr. Manohar Lal and supervised by Dr. Yashpal Sharma, Convener, SVEEP Cell. Members of the SVEEP Cell actively contributed towards organising and conducting the event.
Those present on the occasion included Dr. Annie Amreen, Prof. Anil Verma, Prof. Nisha Sharma, Dr. Sunil Dutt, Dr. Daya Ram, Prof. Arvind Kumar and Prof. Mohd. Shuja.
The essays submitted by the participants were evaluated by a panel of judges comprising Prof. Neeraj Sharma, Head of the Department of English; Prof. Jagmohan Sharma, Head of the Department of Hindi; and Prof. Deepika Sharma, Department of Political Science.
In the competition, Shardha Pangotra secured the first prize, while Shivani Devi bagged the second prize and Bhumika Jasrotia won the third prize.
Speaking on the occasion, Principal Dr. Manohar Lal appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the students and the dedicated efforts of the SVEEP Cell and its members. He emphasised that youth constitute an important pillar of democracy, adding that active participation, awareness and a sense of responsibility among young citizens are essential for strengthening democratic institutions.
The programme concluded with appreciation for all participants, judges and members of the SVEEP Cell for their valuable contribution towards making the initiative meaningful and successful.
