JAMMU, May 14: Shahista Akhter, State President Mahila Morcha, National Loktantrik Party, Jammu & Kashmir, on Thursday expressed serious concern over the continuously rising prices of gold and the heavy taxes imposed on it, which are creating difficulties for middle-class and poor families during the ongoing marriage season.
In a statement issued here, Shahista Akhter appealed to the Prime Minister of India to consider reducing or removing taxes on gold so that economically weaker sections of society can afford to purchase gold ornaments for the marriages of their daughters.
She stated that in Indian society and culture, marriages are considered incomplete without gold ornaments, as they hold deep traditional and emotional value for families across the country.
Shahista Akhter added that many families are already struggling with inflation and unemployment, and the increasing cost of gold has added further financial burden on parents preparing for their daughters’ weddings.
She urged the Government of India to take immediate steps to provide relief to the common people by reviewing the taxation policy on gold and ensuring affordability during the wedding season.
The National Loktantrik Party reiterated its commitment towards raising issues concerning the common people and protecting the interests of economically weaker sections of society.
