JAMMU, Jul 31: Senior BJP leader and former Sarpanch Adv. Devraj Sharma on Friday strongly criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Independent MP Pappu Yadav and other INDIA bloc Members of Parliament for staging a symbolic “Ram Temple donation theft” skit within the Parliament complex, describing the protest as an irresponsible political spectacle that insulted the sentiments of millions of devotees and lowered the dignity of the country’s highest democratic institution.
In a statement issued here, Adv. Sharma said the Opposition’s attempt to use a symbolic street-play to target the issue of Ram Temple donations was “deeply unfortunate” and reflected a deliberate effort to politicize matters of faith for narrow political gains.He alleged that Rahul Gandhi, Pappu Yadav and several other INDIA bloc leaders had once again demonstrated their disregard for Sanatan culture and Hindu traditions by resorting to theatrics over an issue that is already under the scrutiny of competent state investigating agencies.
“The Parliament is a temple of democracy where serious debates on national issues are expected. Converting its premises into a stage for political performances not only diminishes the dignity of Parliament but also weakens public confidence in democratic institutions,” Sharma said.He asserted that every allegation relating to financial transactions or administrative procedures should be investigated through established legal and constitutional mechanisms rather than through publicity-driven demonstrations aimed at creating political narratives.
Adv. Sharma accused the Congress and the Samajwadi Party of adopting what he termed a “selective and hypocritical” approach towards issues of religion and public faith. He said that while the Opposition frequently speaks about protecting constitutional values, it does not hesitate to use religious symbols and sacred institutions as instruments of political confrontation whenever it suits its electoral interests.
He further remarked that the symbolic “donation theft” skit amounted to an attempt to cast aspersions on an institution that holds immense religious significance for crores of devotees across the country. According to him, such actions hurt public sentiments and create unnecessary controversies instead of contributing to meaningful parliamentary discussions.
The senior BJP leader maintained that if any individual or organisation is accused of wrongdoing, the matter should be left to the investigating agencies and judicial process. “No one is above the law, but neither should anyone be declared guilty through political performances and media optics before due process is completed,” he said.Expressing strong displeasure over demonstrations within the Parliament complex, Adv. Sharma urged all Members of Parliament, irrespective of political affiliation, to uphold the dignity, decorum and traditions of the House.
“Parliament is the highest legislative institution of the nation. It should remain a platform for constructive dialogue, policy discussions and democratic debate, not a venue for street-style protests and theatrical performances. Public representatives must conduct themselves in a manner that strengthens people’s faith in parliamentary democracy,” he added.
Calling upon the Opposition to engage in responsible and issue-based politics, Adv. Sharma said democratic disagreement is an essential feature of Parliament, but political expression must always remain within the bounds of constitutional propriety and institutional dignity.He urged political parties to refrain from actions that could hurt religious sentiments or undermine the sanctity of Parliament, emphasizing that national interest, democratic values and respect for India’s civilisational heritage should remain above partisan politics.
