JAMMU, Jun 14: The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party Bhim (JKNPP-Bhim), led by its President Vilakshan Singh, paid rich floral tributes to Brigadier Rajinder Singh, MVC, on the occasion of his birth anniversary, remembering him as the “Savior of Jammu and Kashmir” and a symbol of unparalleled courage and patriotism.
Addressing party workers and supporters, Vilakshan Singh described Brigadier Rajinder Singh as the ultimate Dogra warrior whose sacrifice played a decisive role in safeguarding Jammu and Kashmir during one of the most critical periods in its history. He said the Brigadier embodied the indomitable spirit, bravery and selfless service that have long been associated with the Dogra community.
Recalling the events of October 1947, Singh said Brigadier Rajinder Singh, acting on the orders of Maharaja Hari Singh, led a small force of around 150 soldiers against thousands of Pakistani tribal invaders who had entered the state. Despite being vastly outnumbered, he and his men put up a fierce resistance and successfully delayed the enemy advance.
Singh highlighted that Brigadier Rajinder Singh ordered the destruction of the strategically important Uri Bridge and continued to hold back the advancing forces for four crucial days. This delay, he said, proved decisive as it provided the necessary time for Maharaja Hari Singh to sign the Instrument of Accession with India and enabled Indian troops to be airlifted to Srinagar to defend the Valley.
Paying homage to the legendary military commander, Vilakshan Singh said Brigadier Rajinder Singh laid down his life on October 26, 1947, while defending the state at Boniyar. For his exceptional gallantry and supreme sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, becoming independent India’s first recipient of the prestigious honour.
He expressed concern that many young people remain unaware of the Brigadier’s historic contribution and demanded that the heroic role played by the Dogra forces in defending Jammu and Kashmir be included in school curricula across the country. Such a step, he said, would help preserve and promote the legacy of one of the greatest heroes of Jammu and Kashmir for future generations.
Among those who participated in the tribute programme were Naresh Chib, Rajesh Gondhi, Sanju Bhagat, Rajan Jamwal, Sanjeev Verma and several other party members and supporters.
