JAMMU, May 30: On the eve of World No Tobacco Day, IDPS Jammu organized the First Onco Assembly in collaboration with the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India and LBNROH, with the objective of creating awareness among students about the harmful effects of tobacco and encouraging them to become ambassadors of a healthier and tobacco-free society.
The event witnessed the presence of distinguished guests including Dr. Deepak Abrol, President of the North Zone Association of Radiation Oncologists of India and Chairman Trustee, LBNROH; Shashi Khajuria, Secretary, LBNROH; Malvika Khajuria, Joint Secretary, LBNROH; Dr. Surbhi Kudyar, Advisor, LBNROH; and coordinators of the initiative, Yasir Chauhan and Mazar Iqbal. The dignitaries appreciated the school’s efforts in promoting health awareness and empowering students to take an active role in addressing social and public health challenges.
A major highlight of the assembly was an engaging debate competition on the topic “Tobacco Ban – The Need of the Hour.” Students participated enthusiastically, presenting well-researched arguments and demonstrating remarkable confidence, awareness, and critical thinking while discussing one of the most significant public health concerns facing society today. The competition reflected the students’ understanding of the health, social, and economic consequences of tobacco consumption.
In the debate competition, Dayaanah Shah secured the first prize, while Anjan Kour won the second prize and Harnidh Kaur Kandhari secured the third position. Consolation prizes were awarded to Jaismeet Kour and Mateeba Mughal for their commendable performances. The winners were applauded for their eloquence, knowledge, and persuasive presentations.
On the occasion, Dr. Deepak Abrol administered a pledge to students, teachers, and participants, encouraging them to adopt a tobacco-free lifestyle and spread awareness about the dangers associated with tobacco use. Addressing the gathering, he emphasized the urgent need for preventive measures and awareness campaigns to reduce the burden of tobacco-related diseases, including cancer.
Dr. Abrol also informed the audience that the First OncoAssembly marks the beginning of a series of activities leading up to the much-awaited Oncology Parliament and CRABECON Cancer Convention 2026. These initiatives will bring together eminent oncologists, researchers, policymakers, students, and cancer survivors on a common platform to discuss cancer awareness, prevention, treatment, and community engagement. He highlighted that the concept of OncoAssembly has been designed to engage young minds in meaningful discussions on health, leadership, and social responsibility.
He further acknowledged the valuable support extended by J&K Bank, which has partnered with and supported the Oncology Parliament initiative, including OncoAssembly and the CRABECON Cancer Convention. The collaboration, he noted, will significantly contribute towards cancer awareness, education, and community empowerment across Jammu and Kashmir.
The assembly concluded on an inspiring note, reinforcing the message that young people have the power to bring about positive change in society. The event served as a strong reminder that collective awareness, informed choices, and responsible action can help build a healthier future. Participants pledged to say “No to Tobacco” and work towards creating a safer and healthier environment for future generations.
