JAMMU, Sep 24: HDFC Bank has showcased five Digital Rupee (CBDC) use cases aimed at expanding the adoption and practical utility of India’s sovereign digital currency among both individual customers and businesses. The initiatives, unveiled at an industry forum last week, focus on integrating the Digital Rupee into everyday consumer transactions, corporate payments and offline payment environments.

Under the first initiative, customers will soon be to redeem eligible credit-card rewards against Digital Rupee, similar to the way brand-specific reward vouchers are currently used. The rewards can be redeemed across categories such as dining, fuel, apparel and electronics, with customers able to use the full value down to the last paise.

The facility is intended to provide greater flexibility and transparency in the utilisation of reward benefits.

The bank is also developing Digital Rupee gift vouchers for promotional campaigns. Under the proposed system, qualifying customer events can automatically trigger a Digital Rupee voucher, which would be loaded directly into the customer’s HDFC Bank Digital Rupee wallet. Customers would then be able to spend the voucher by scanning UPI QR codes at participating merchants across different categories, providing greater flexibility in the use of promotional benefits.

Another initiative is aimed at corporate users. Organisations will soon be able to independently disburse meal, fuel and travel allowances in Digital Rupee through HDFC Bank’s Corporate Net-banking platform. The proposed programmable payment mechanism is designed to ensure that funds are used for their intended purposes while reducing compliance and reconciliation-related work for finance teams.

HDFC Bank has also announced that its Digital Rupee wallets will be made available on BHIM, allowing customers to make familiar UPI-style payments directly through their CBDC wallets. The integration is expected to broaden the usability of Digital Rupee and provide customers with a more familiar payment experience while increasing access to participating merchants.

The fifth use case extends Digital Rupee payments to situations where conventional internet connectivity may not be available. Customers will soon be able to tap their phones on HDFC Bank point-of-sale devices onboard flights to pay for food, beverages and seat upgrades. According to the bank, the facility is designed to enable transactions even without internet connectivity, potentially expanding the use of CBDC in offline environments.

Ashish Parthasarathy, Group Head, Branch Banking, Payments, Treasury, Liability Products, Marketing, Virtual Channels and Infrastructure, HDFC Bank, said Digital Rupee combines the characteristics of sovereign money with programmability, transparency and stronger controls. He said the showcased use cases address emerging requirements relating to purpose-bound payments, compliance and auditability across retail and wholesale markets.

Rajanish Prabhu, Senior EVP, HDFC Bank, said the next phase of Digital Rupee adoption would involve greater scale and everyday utility. He said integrating CBDC into familiar payment journeys such as UPI, merchant payments, rewards, employee benefits and offline transactions could make it easier for customers and businesses to use the Digital Rupee in their daily activities.

The bank said CBDC can complement UPI by providing features such as programmability, purpose-based controls and enhanced transparency that are different from conventional account-based digital payments. From corporate allowance disbursements to offline transactions during flights, the initiatives showcased by HDFC Bank reflect an effort to integrate Digital Rupee into a wider range of retail and corporate payment applications.

The developments also highlight the evolving role of CBDC technology in India’s digital payments ecosystem, with financial institutions exploring ways to combine the accessibility of familiar digital payment methods with programmable and purpose-specific applications.
