Suvendu controversy exposes BJP’s selective morality, political opportunism: Tony
JAMMU, May 31: Senior Congress leader and former DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony, today launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of practicing rank hypocrisy and exploiting religious sentiments for electoral gains while abandoning its own rhetoric when politically inconvenient.
Tony said that for decades, the BJP has built its politics around “Gau Mata,” portraying itself as the sole guardian of Hindu faith and culture. “From election rallies to television debates, BJP leaders have repeatedly sought votes in the name of the cow, preaching morality and nationalism to the nation. Yet today, when controversy surrounds remarks made by West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, the entire BJP ecosystem has gone mute. Their silence is exposing the biggest political fraud of modern times,” he said.
“The BJP turned the cow into an election symbol, a tool for polarization, and a weapon for harvesting votes. But when it comes to showing consistency, courage, and conviction, the party disappears. Their selective outrage has become their political trademark,” Tony remarked.
He further pointed out that the BJP-led Union Government itself has admitted that there is no proposal under consideration to declare the cow as India’s national animal and no proposal for a nationwide ban on cow slaughter.
“This admission has shattered the BJP’s carefully manufactured narrative. The party that spent years emotionally blackmailing people in the name of cow protection has failed to take the very steps it demanded from others. If the cow was truly central to BJP’s ideology, why has the party failed to act despite ruling the country for more than a decade?” Tony asked.
He said the BJP’s actions have proved that “Gau Mata” was never a matter of principle for the party but merely a convenient election slogan.
“Before elections, they chant ‘Gau Mata’. After elections, they forget every promise. Before elections, they accuse opponents of being anti-Hindu. After elections, they quietly bury the very issues on which they sought votes. This is not ideology; this is political opportunism of the highest order,” he said.
Tony accused the BJP of systematically exploiting religious emotions while failing to address real issues affecting citizens, including unemployment, inflation, farmers’ distress, and economic uncertainty.
“The country deserves answers. Why are BJP leaders silent today? Why are those who claimed exclusive ownership over Hindu sentiments refusing to speak now? Why does the BJP invoke faith only when votes are at stake? The people of India are no longer willing to be misled by manufactured outrage and selective morality,” he said.
The Congress leader asserted that faith is a matter of personal belief and reverence, not a commodity for electoral marketing.
“The BJP’s mask has finally slipped. Its politics of religious exploitation stands thoroughly exposed. The nation can now clearly see the difference between genuine respect for faith and cynical political theatre designed to win elections. The BJP owes an explanation to every citizen who was asked to vote in the name of issues that its own government has failed to pursue,” Tony added.
He said that India needs honest governance, accountability, economic progress and social harmony—not endless political drama driven by hypocrisy and double standards.
“The era of emotional manipulation is coming to an end. The people are watching, questioning and holding accountable those who turned faith into a political business model,” Tony concluded.
