Doda Journalist develops ‘ScanPatra’, a Made-in-India Android App bringing multiple document tools into one platform

DODA, Jul 6: In an era where users often rely on multiple applications and websites for everyday document-related tasks, a journalist from Jammu & Kashmir has developed an Android application that aims to simplify the entire workflow within a single platform.

Anzer Ayoob, a journalist from Thathri in Doda district and founder of The Chenab Times, has developed ScanPatra, a Made-in-India document productivity app for Android. The application combines document scanning, OCR (text recognition), PDF editing, document management, QR document import, and several PDF utilities into one app.

According to the developer, the idea for ScanPatra emerged from his own daily work as a journalist.

“I was constantly switching between different websites and apps. One platform for compressing PDFs, another for merging documents, another for editing PDFs, and many document scanner apps locked essential features behind subscriptions or added watermarks. I felt there had to be a better solution, so I decided to build it myself,” Ayoob said.

The app includes features such as document scanning, PDF compression, PDF merging, page extraction, digital signatures, QR-based document import, offline document storage, and a built-in letter maker for drafting applications, certificates, notices, and press releases.

Unlike many free document applications, ScanPatra focuses on offering its core features without imposing watermarks or mandatory subscriptions for basic functionality. The app also follows an offline-first approach, allowing users to process many document tasks directly on their devices.

Since its launch, the application has received positive feedback from users and currently maintains a 5.0-star rating on Trustpilot. The developer says user feedback is shaping future updates, with AI-assisted document features such as Image-to-Word conversion, table extraction to Excel, and intelligent document summarisation already planned.

Developed independently from Jammu & Kashmir, ScanPatra reflects the growing contribution of individual Indian developers in creating practical software solutions. The project aligns with the broader vision of promoting indigenous technology under initiatives such as Make in India and Vocal for Local.

Ayoob, who has worked in journalism for several years, says his experience in handling government records, legal documents, certificates, and reports helped identify everyday problems faced by students, professionals, journalists, and government employees.

“The objective was never to create just another scanner app. The goal was to build a complete document workspace that saves time and reduces dependence on multiple applications,” he said.

The application is available for download on the Google Play Store and continues to receive regular updates based on community suggestions.
