Alcohol is Haram in Islam, should be banned: MLA Devsar

DEVSAR May 16: MLA Devsar Peerzada Feroze Ahmad Shah on Saturday said alcohol is “Haram” in Islam and called for a ban on liquor and all forms of narcotics, while taking a swipe at the BJP over recent protests on the issue in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to Top News JK Correspondent Gh Nabi Khanday after a public darbar in the remote Batangoo Kund area of Kulgam district, Shah said he personally opposes alcohol and intoxicants, asserting that Islam clearly prohibits their consumption.

“We are Muslims and our Prophet has forbidden it. Just like pork is Haram, alcohol is also Haram in Islam. If it is Haram, why should we consume it,” he said.

Referring to the BJP’s protests over liquor sales in J&K, Shah said the party has governments across the country except a few states and should approach Prime Minister Narendra Modi if it is serious about imposing prohibition.

“They have governments across the country except a few states and the Prime Minister is theirs. They should go and meet the PM regarding a ban on alcohol across the country and we will support it,” he said.

The National Conference legislator also said targeting a particular party and staging protests at one place would not resolve the issue, adding that governance in Jammu and Kashmir is partly under the Lieutenant Governor-led administration.
