PAHALGAM, Jun 4: In a significant step towards ensuring smooth and environmentally sustainable arrangements for the upcoming Shri Amarnath Yatra, a joint inspection was conducted on Thursday by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Pahalgam Development Authority Nasrool Hilal Jeri, and Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) Anantnag, Shafiq Ahmad Wani.

The inspection focused on reviewing preparations at various Yatra camp locations and identifying a suitable site for the scientific management and processing of solid waste generated during the annual pilgrimage.

Speaking on the occasion, ACD Anantnag Shafiq Ahmad Wani said that the Rural Sanitation Department has traditionally been entrusted with maintaining sanitation and cleanliness during the Shri Amarnath Yatra. He said comprehensive arrangements are being made to ensure hygienic conditions for the thousands of pilgrims expected to undertake the pilgrimage this year.

Wani informed that toilets, bathrooms, and other essential sanitation facilities will be established at all designated camp sites. He added that special attention is being given to the scientific handling and disposal of waste generated by community kitchens, langars, and other temporary establishments operating along the Yatra route.

“Waste generated during the Yatra will be scientifically processed and managed to minimize environmental impact and maintain cleanliness across the pilgrimage corridor,” he said.

The ACD further revealed that several potential sites have already been inspected for setting up a waste processing facility and that a final location will be identified shortly. He expressed confidence that all necessary infrastructure and sanitation arrangements would be fully operational within the next ten days.

Emphasizing the importance of public participation, Wani appealed to pilgrims, local residents, service providers, and all stakeholders to cooperate with the administration in maintaining cleanliness during the Yatra.

He urged people to make proper use of designated waste collection points and dustbins so that garbage can be collected efficiently and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.

“The success of a clean and sustainable Yatra depends on collective efforts. We request everyone to support the administration by following waste management guidelines and helping preserve the ecological balance of the region,” he said.

The administration has reiterated its commitment to providing a safe, hygienic, and environmentally sustainable pilgrimage experience while safeguarding the fragile ecosystem of the Pahalgam area, one of the key base camps for the annual Shri Amarnath Yatra.
