SHIMLA, Jun 3: The Hon’ble Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Kavinder Gupta today described the media as an integral pillar of the democratic framework, emphasizing that its role extends beyond the dissemination of information to educating society and guiding people towards constructive and positive change.
The Governor was addressing a gathering at the launch of High Flyer, a coffee table book published by a leading media group, in Shimla. On the occasion, he felicitated distinguished achievers from diverse fields whose accomplishments have been featured in the publication.
Highlighting the growing importance of responsible journalism in the age of rapid information exchange, Shri Kavinder Gupta said that the credibility of the media rests on its commitment to truth, accuracy and objectivity. He observed that balanced and fact-based reporting strengthens democratic values, promotes transparency and helps create an informed and aware citizenry.
The Governor commended the media for its role in shaping public opinion and fostering social awareness. He noted that initiatives such as High Flyer not only recognize excellence but also provide a platform for showcasing inspiring stories of individuals who have made significant contributions to society. Such efforts, he said, motivate others, particularly the youth, to pursue excellence and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
Expressing concern over the growing menace of drug abuse, Shri Kavinder Gupta said that substance abuse has emerged as one of the most serious challenges confronting society today and poses a grave threat to the future of the youth. He observed that social distortions often arise when individuals become disconnected from their cultural roots and values. The Governor also linked the rise of such problems to the gradual decline of the joint family system, which traditionally provided guidance, emotional support and value-based upbringing.
He emphasized that government initiatives alone cannot effectively address the challenge of drug abuse without active public participation. Calling upon society to remain vigilant, he urged people of the state to support awareness campaigns and community-driven efforts to combat the menace. He further stressed that the media has a significant role to play in spreading awareness against substance abuse and mobilizing collective action.
Congratulating the awardees recognized as the “Best of Himachal,” the Governor said that the coffee table book is a compilation of inspiring success stories of extraordinary individuals who have dedicated themselves to the progress, prosperity and development of Himachal Pradesh. He observed that the State, renowned for its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and vibrant traditions, has always been a land of immense talent and potential.
Appreciating the constructive role of media in promoting public awareness and social responsibility, the Governor called upon the people of Himachal Pradesh to contribute their share towards building a stronger society and taking the nation to new heights of progress and development.
Earlier, Editor of the newspaper group Shri Bavindra Vashisht, welcomed the Governor and briefed him about the objectives of the coffee table book and the initiative behind recognizing outstanding achievers from across the State.
