KARGIL, Jul 25: In a landmark achievement for healthcare in Ladakh, the Department of Orthopaedics at Community Health Centre (CHC) Sankoo successfully performed the first-ever bilateral Total Knee Replacement (cemented) for Severe osteoarthritis (Grade-4) surgery in a single sitting.
This historic milestone marks the first time such an advanced orthopaedic procedure has been performed at CHC Sankoo, bringing specialized surgical care closer to the people of Sankoo and the Suru Valley. The achievement will significantly reduce the need for patients to travel to distant hospitals for advanced joint replacement surgery.
The surgery was successfully performed by Dr. Altaf Hussain, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, CHC Sankoo, along with Dr. Ahmad Ali, Sr Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, (QAAM) District Hospital, Kargil, with the support of a dedicated surgical and operation theatre team.
Anaesthesia was expertly administered by Dr. Asif, Senior Consultant Anaesthetist, QAAM District Hospital, Kargil, along with the anaesthesia team, ensuring the procedure was conducted safely and smoothly.
The coordinated efforts of the entire medical team resulted in the successful completion of the surgery, restoring hope, mobility, and an improved quality of life for the patient.
The successful completion of the first Total Knee Replacement surgery at CHC Sankoo marks a significant milestone in the healthcare journey of the region. Besides providing immense relief to the patient, it establishes a new benchmark in delivering advanced orthopaedic and specialized surgical services in the remote areas of Ladakh.
