SRINAGAR, Jun 20 (Agencies): The Jammu and Kashmir government has suspended a cardiologist at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag pending an inquiry into alleged irregularities in cardiac procedures conducted under the PMJAY-SEHAT scheme, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo said on Saturday.
The suspension of Dr. Syed Maqbool follows a departmental probe by the SKIMS panel into the cardiac procedures performed at GMC Anantnag. The inquiry report alleged procedural irregularities, wrongful claims under the PMJAY-SEHAT scheme and other acts of misconduct, and recommended major disciplinary action.
“We had initiated an inquiry after receiving complaints and a suspension order has now been issued in this regard,” Itoo told reporters in Kulgam
The minister, however, stressed that the doctor must be given an opportunity to present his defense before any final decision is taken.
“He should also get a chance to clear his position. Such incidents are unfortunate. The profession of a doctor is a noble one and doctors should never compromise with the lives of patients,” she said.
Dr. Maqbool has denied the allegations and submitted a detailed response to the authorities, describing the charges as baseless.
Itoo said the government was committed to ensuring a fair and transparent process.
“We started this inquiry and we will take it to its logical conclusion,” she said.
The case has attracted attention within medical and public circles, with some members of the medical fraternity calling for fair probe as the inquiry continues.
