JJM Scheme stalls, Thathoo residents grapple with acute water shortage

KULGAM, Aug 25: Residents of Thathoo village in the Kund belt of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district continue to face an acute shortage of drinking water, as a water supply scheme sanctioned under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in 2022 at a cost of over ₹1.5 crore remains incomplete.

The scheme was envisaged to provide a reliable drinking water supply to the village and its adjoining areas. However, residents said the project has remained unfinished for years, leaving the population dependent on limited sources of water.

They said the service reservoir (SR) and pipelines have been laid, but the scheme is yet to become fully operational as the remaining work is pending.

Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE), Jal Shakti (PHE) Qazigund, Naveed Khanday, attributed the delay to pending payments to the contractor under the JJM.

“The work on the ongoing lift scheme has been delayed by the contractor due to pending JJM payments. Once the payment is released, work on the project will be resumed accordingly,”
