Promises to bridge regions, build trust
JAMMU, Jun 23: In a significant political development, seasoned administrator and former Deputy Director of the Department of Health Services, Dr. Rohit Gupta, formally joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday, marking a new chapter in his long journey of public service and political engagement.
Known for his vast administrative experience and grassroots connect, Dr. Gupta’s induction into the PDP is being viewed as a major boost for the party’s organizational outreach, particularly in the Jammu region. His entry comes after years of active involvement in public affairs and political organization, making him a respected figure in Jammu and Kashmir’s socio-political landscape.
Dr. Gupta served the Department of Health Services, Jammu and Kashmir, for nearly 28 years, holding several key positions including Coordinator, District Officer, Controller Stores, and Private Secretary to the then Planning Minister during the government led by late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. He concluded his distinguished government career as Deputy Director before retiring in 2020.
Following his superannuation, he remained actively engaged in public life and joined the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party, where he served as Provincial Secretary and Membership Incharge, contributing significantly to organizational strengthening and public outreach initiatives.
His association with politics, however, dates back much earlier. Between 1987 and 1990, Dr. Gupta served as Joint Secretary of the Awami National Conference, reflecting his longstanding commitment to public service and democratic participation.
Welcoming Dr. Gupta into the party fold, PDP leaders led by former Chief Minister Mehboob Mufti expressed confidence that his administrative acumen, political experience, and understanding of public issues would further strengthen the party’s vision of inclusive governance and people-centric development.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rohit Gupta said, “Jammu and Kashmir stands at a crucial juncture where the need of the hour is to rebuild trust, strengthen democratic institutions, and ensure equitable development for every citizen. I have always believed that public service is the highest responsibility, whether inside government or outside it. After careful consideration, I have decided to join the People’s Democratic Party because I see in it a sincere commitment towards safeguarding the aspirations of the people and promoting peace, dignity, and progress.”
“My endeavour will be to work tirelessly for the welfare of people in both Jammu and Kashmir regions, bridging gaps, strengthening unity, and ensuring that the voices of youth, employees, farmers, traders, and marginalized sections are heard and addressed. Together, we must strive for a prosperous, peaceful, and inclusive Jammu and Kashmir where every citizen feels respected, empowered, and represented.”
Political observers believe that Dr. Gupta’s entry into the PDP could help the party expand its outreach among employees, professionals, and civil society groups, particularly in Jammu, owing to his extensive administrative experience and strong public connect developed over decades of service.
His induction is expected to further energize the party’s efforts to strengthen its organizational network and broaden its engagement with people across the Union Territory.
Among those present on the occasion were PDP President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, Additional General Secretary Khursheed Alam, Ghulam Nabi Hanjura, Senior Advocate Abdul Majid Dar, Khalid Mir (Provincial President, Kashmir), Khawaja Mir, Rajinder Manhas, Women’s Wing President Anjum Fazili, Sat Pal Chaddak, besides several senior party leaders, office bearers, and workers from different parts of Jammu and Kashmir who welcomed Dr. Rohit Gupta into the party fold.
