Seeks impartial probe into reports of proposed shrine construction on Shankaracharya Hill
JAMMU, Oct 29: The Sadhu Dharam Sthan Surakshini Samiti, Jammu and Kashmir, held its annual convention at New Ashoka Hotel, Jammu, under the chairmanship of its president, Mahant Datt Giri Maharaj. Newly inducted members were welcomed with traditional garlands during the gathering.
During the convention, more than 70 saints expressed concern over reports regarding the proposed construction of a shrine on Shankaracharya Hill in Kashmir. The Samiti appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and order an impartial inquiry into reports of funds allegedly sanctioned by the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board for construction on or near the hill.
The organisation stressed that the site’s historical and religious significance, the legal status of the land and the requisite permissions should be thoroughly examined before any changes are made to its existing character.
The Samiti also announced plans to visit Kashmir to assess the situation on the ground and work towards the restoration and rehabilitation of dilapidated temples across the region.
Established in 1959, the registered organisation has been working towards the protection and management of monasteries and temples, including the preservation of religious worship and traditional rituals.
Prominent religious leaders attending the convention included Mahant Abhay Giri Maharaj, Mahant Mohan Giri Maharaj, Mahant Rameshwar Giri Maharaj, Mahant Kanhaiyanand Saraswati, Mahant Chetan Giri and Mahant Subhash Shah, along with other saints and members of the Samiti.
The convention concluded with the organisation reiterating its commitment to protecting religious heritage and seeking clarification from the concerned authorities regarding the proposed construction and the preservation of Shankaracharya Hill’s historical and religious character.
