JAMMU, Oct 24: Pt Prem Nath Dogra was a visionary leader, a champion of unity, and a true patriot who dedicated his life to serving the nation. Born on October 24, 1884, in Smailpur, Jammu, Dogra’s life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to the nation and its people. His remarkable journey, marked by academic excellence, social service, and politics, continues to inspire generations.
Dogra’s early life was marked by academic excellence, graduating with a BA in 1908 from Lahore. His passion for social service and politics led him to become a key figure in the Jammu Praja Parishad, a party he helped form in 1947 alongside Balraj Madhok. The party served as a local political arm of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing Hindutva paramilitary organisation.
As President of the Jammu and Kashmir Praja Parishad in 1949, Dogra fearlessly demanded the abolition of Article 370, which granted autonomous status to the state. His unwavering stance led to his arrest, along with hundreds of party members, for demanding the adoption of the Indian flag in the region. Undeterred, Dogra continued to fight for the cause, even facing arrest again in 1952 during a demonstration against the hoisting of both the state and national flags in Jammu.
Dogra’s contributions to Indian politics did not go unnoticed. He was elected as the President of Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1955, a position he held with distinction.
