JAMMU, Jun 24: Jammu & Kashmir’s eminent social worker Brij Lal Bhat was conferred the prestigious Padma Shri by the Hon’ble President of India at the Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on Tuesday. Shri Bhat has been honoured for his outstanding and sustained contributions in the field of social work.
A respected public figure and grassroots social worker, Brij Lal Bhat has devoted decades of his life to community service, social upliftment, cultural preservation, and humanitarian initiatives. Through his tireless efforts, he has worked towards strengthening social harmony, promoting community welfare, and preserving cultural heritage of Jammu & Kashmir.
Born on March 16, 1945, in Anantnag, Kashmir, Brij Lal Bhat is a distinguished horticulture expert and social worker whose contributions span both public service and community development.
A postgraduate in Horticulture with specialised training from Washington State University, USA, he held several key positions in Jammu & Kashmir’s agriculture and horticulture sectors.
He played a pioneering role in strengthening the Union Territory’s fruit industry through the introduction of modern packaging, cold-chain infrastructure, scientific propagation techniques and the promotion of horticultural exports.
Following his professional career, Bhat dedicated himself to social and spiritual service as Chairman of the Administrative Committee of Ramakrishna Mahasammelan Ashram–Vivekananda Kendra, Nagdandi, Anantnag. Under his leadership, the Ashram has emerged as a centre for promoting peace, social harmony, national integration and the ideals of Swami Vivekananda.
Through youth engagement programmes, community outreach initiatives and efforts to reconnect displaced communities with their cultural roots, he has made a significant contribution to fostering unity and societal well-being in Jammu & Kashmir.
The Padma Awards, among the country’s highest civilian honours, are conferred in recognition of exceptional and distinguished service in various fields. Brij Lal Bhat’s achievement serves as an inspiration for present and future generations to work towards the welfare of society with commitment and dedication.
