Says locals face 30-minute supply followed by 2-hour cuts amid rising heat and public anger
MIRAN SAHIB, Jun 30: A worsening electricity crisis in Miran Sahib has triggered widespread public distress, with residents enduring some of the most severe night power cuts in recent times, leaving households across the area sleepless amid intense summer heat conditions. Adding to the hardship, residents alleged an equally frustrating pattern during the daytime, where just about 30 minutes of electricity supply is followed by nearly two hours of power cut, creating a cycle of disruption that has left all sections of society irritated, exhausted, and increasingly frustrated.
The crisis has had a direct and severe impact on all sections of society, particularly children, elderly citizens, patients, and students, who are struggling to cope with repeated and prolonged outages during night hours when uninterrupted electricity is most essential. Residents describe the situation as “unbearable,” stating that nights have turned into hours of discomfort, heat stress, and exhaustion due to the absence of stable power supply. At the centre of growing public anger is senior BJP leader and former Sarpanch Adv. Devraj Sharma, who has strongly criticised the NC-led administration under Vice President Omar Abdullah’s political leadership, alleging complete failure in governance and infrastructure restoration.
Sharma expressed serious concern over the prolonged non-functionality of the 1×10 MVA, 33/11 KV Receiving Station at Bansultan (Miran Sahib), which was commissioned under a Centrally Sponsored Scheme but has remained defunct for nearly one year following flood damage last year. He said the continued delay in restoration reflects administrative apathy and lack of urgency despite repeated public hardship. He stated that the shutdown of this critical infrastructure has severely destabilized the local power distribution system, resulting in frequent tripping, low voltage, and unannounced outages—particularly during peak night hours when demand is highest and dependence on electricity is critical.
“The worst suffering is being faced at night when families are trying to rest. Children are unable to sleep, elderly people are exhausted, and the entire population is going through sleepless nights in extreme heat,” Sharma said, highlighting the human cost of the ongoing crisis. He further alleged that despite repeated complaints and worsening conditions, there has been no meaningful action from the concerned authorities to restore the damaged receiving station or improve supply stability, terming it a “serious governance failure with direct public consequences.”
Residents of Miran Sahib and adjoining areas have also expressed strong resentment, stating that the continuous night power cuts combined with erratic daytime supply have made daily life extremely difficult, particularly during the ongoing heat conditions, with the health and well-being of vulnerable groups being severely affected. Adv. Devraj Sharma has demanded immediate restoration of the Bansultan Receiving Station, urgent strengthening of the local power infrastructure, and a time-bound action plan to end the recurring outages. He warned that continued administrative inaction would further intensify public anger and deepen the crisis of trust between citizens and the system.
