Memorandum submitted to SDM Chowki Choura seeking urgent public safety and infrastructure upgradation on NH-144A

JAMMU, Jun 16: A comprehensive memorandum highlighting critical public safety concerns and pressing infrastructure requirements along NH-144A, particularly in the strategically important Kandi–Sungal Tunnel corridor, was submitted to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Chowki Choura.

The memorandum was submitted by Krishan Lal Sharma, Former Regional Manager, Jammu & Kashmir Grameen Bank, Chairman, Employees Pension Trust, Jammu & Kashmir Grameen Bank, and BJP State Co-Convenor, Cooperative Cell, JKUT, along with almost all former Sarpanches of Tehsil Chowki Choura and several eminent citizens and social representatives of the area.

The memorandum emphasizes the urgent need for key public welfare measures, including construction of a passenger waiting shed at the southern portal of Kandi Tunnel, development of safe pedestrian infrastructure, installation of speed-regulating mechanisms, enhancement of tunnel illumination, construction of RCC protection walls at vulnerable locations, repair and upgradation of the Kappa Galla–Accident Hospital road, installation of adequate road safety signage, and restoration of damaged link roads connecting nearby villages.

The delegation expressed serious concern over the continued neglect of these genuine public demands despite repeated representations and highlighted the potential risks to commuters, pedestrians, and local residents. The memorandum urged the Administration to take up the matter with the concerned departments on priority and ensure the timely execution of these essential works in the larger interest of public safety, commuter convenience, and regional development.

The signatories also appealed for the renaming of the Kandi and Sungal Tunnels in a manner that reflects the rich historical, cultural, and social heritage of the region and resonates with the aspirations of the local population.

The delegation expressed confidence that the Administration would give due consideration to these long-pending public issues and initiate prompt action for their resolution.
