JAMMU, Sep 23: Describing Maharaja Hari Singh as a visionary ruler and progressive reformer, R.L. Kaith paid tribute to the former ruler of Jammu and Kashmir on his birth anniversary and highlighted his contributions to education, social reform, governance and public welfare.

Born on September 23, 1895, Maharaja Hari Singh became the last reigning Maharaja of the princely State of Jammu and Kashmir. Kaith said his accession to the throne in 1925 marked the beginning of a period of significant administrative and social reforms.

He highlighted the Maharaja’s initiatives in the field of education, including the introduction of free and compulsory primary education in 1930. Kaith also recalled measures aimed at addressing social practices such as child marriage and female infanticide, describing them as significant reforms for the period.

According to Kaith, Maharaja Hari Singh also worked towards greater social equality and took steps to open state temples to communities that had previously faced social exclusion. He said the Maharaja’s reforms reflected an emphasis on reducing social discrimination and expanding access to public institutions.

Kaith also recalled family accounts about the Maharaja’s generosity and personality. He shared an anecdote about celebrations following the birth of Yuvraj Karan Singh, saying the Maharaja distributed gold chains among palace staff as a gesture of generosity. He also recalled stories from his grandfather about the Maharaja’s appearance, dignity and interactions with people.

Kaith further spoke about the Maharaja’s role during the events of 1947, stating that Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession on October 26, 1947, leading to Jammu and Kashmir’s accession to India. The accession took place amid the conflict and armed invasion that followed the Partition of British India.

The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh records that a full-fledged High Court of Judicature for the State was established in 1928, during Maharaja Hari Singh’s reign, marking an important development in the state’s judicial system.

Kaith said the Maharaja’s contributions should be remembered as part of Jammu and Kashmir’s history and that his emphasis on education, social equality and governance could provide inspiration to younger generations.
