Livasa Hospital Amritsar gives new lease of life to 72-year-old brain tumour patient

JAMMU/ AMRITSAR, Oct 12: A 72-year-old woman received a new lease of life after undergoing complex skull base surgery for a giant brain tumour at Livasa Hospital, Amritsar.

The neurosurgical team successfully performed a microscopic excision of an olfactory groove meningioma measuring more than 6 centimetres, offering hope to the patient who had been experiencing multiple serious neurological symptoms.

According to hospital details, the patient was admitted with altered sensorium, recurrent seizures, loss of smell and impaired vision. Medical investigations revealed a giant olfactory groove meningioma, a tumour located at the skull base in the frontal region of the brain, close to structures responsible for smell and vision.

The complex procedure was performed by Dr. Amanjot Singh Boparai, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Livasa Hospital. The surgery involved a bifrontal craniotomy, followed by the microscopic removal of the tumour.

Explaining the condition, Dr. Boparai said olfactory groove meningiomas develop from the protective membranes surrounding the brain, particularly in the frontal and skull base regions.

He explained that the symptoms of these tumours depend on their size and location and may include loss of smell, visual impairment, seizures, headaches and changes in consciousness.

Dr. Boparai further stated that giant tumours pose significant surgical challenges because of their proximity to critical neurological structures and blood vessels. Their removal requires careful planning, precision and specialised neurosurgical expertise to minimise risks and protect surrounding brain tissue.

The successful procedure highlights the role of advanced neurosurgical techniques in managing complex brain tumours, particularly among elderly patients. Early diagnosis and timely medical intervention remain important in identifying such conditions and determining appropriate treatment.

The case also underscores the importance of specialised neurological care for patients presenting with persistent visual changes, recurrent seizures, loss of smell or altered consciousness, which require prompt medical evaluation.
