JAMMU, Oct 1: Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) today completed and inaugurated a rainwater harvesting project at Government Girls High School (GGHS), Gandhi Nagar. The project, initiated around two months ago, was inaugurated by Dr. Devansh Yadav, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation, as part of the Corporation’s ongoing efforts towards water conservation, groundwater recharge and sustainable environmental management.
The programme was organised as part of the Seva Parv activities. A water conservation pledge was also administered on the occasion, in which students, teachers and JMC officials pledged to save water, prevent its wastage and use this precious natural resource judiciously. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Yadav stressed the importance of involving students in water conservation and encouraging them to adopt responsible water-saving practices in their daily lives and spread awareness among their families and communities.
Dr. Yadav said that the JMC is undertaking several initiatives under the “Clean Jammu, Green Jammu” campaign to mark Gandhi Jayanti. He said that under the “Catch the Rain” campaign, similar rainwater harvesting projects will be implemented in more than 1,000 government schools. The initiative, he said, will not only help conserve rainwater and facilitate groundwater recharge but also create greater awareness among the younger generation about the importance of saving water.
The Commissioner also visited a park in Gandhi Nagar where a rainwater harvesting system has been installed and reviewed the facility. He said that similar systems are being developed in approximately 26 parks across Jammu city to capture rainwater and facilitate its recharge into the ground. Such interventions, he added, will help reduce the loss of rainwater through surface runoff and contribute towards replenishing groundwater resources, while strengthening the city’s efforts towards sustainable water management.
Joint Commissioner (Health and Sanitation) Abdul Sattar, Health Officer Dr. Shahid Hussain, Assistant Floriculture Officer Dr. Rabia Khan, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Dr. Divya Sharma, School Principal Anjamin Jabeen, Executive Engineer Yasir Bashir Kitchloo, along with other JMC officers, officials, teachers and students, were present on the occasion.
