JAMMU, Sep 7: India’s automobile retail market recorded its highest-ever August sales performance in 2026, with total vehicle registrations reaching 24,23,201 units, registering a 17.51 per cent year-on-year growth, according to the latest data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

The growth was led by Wheeled Construction Equipment, which rose 31.45 per cent, followed by Two-Wheelers at 19.69 per cent, Passenger Vehicles at 16.14 per cent and Commercial Vehicles at 14.45 per cent.

A major structural shift was also recorded in the Passenger Vehicle segment, with alternative fuels overtaking petrol for the first time. CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles together accounted for 41.95 per cent of the market, comprising CNG at 25.28 per cent, hybrids at 9.04 per cent and EVs at 7.63 per cent. Petrol and ethanol blends accounted for 40.85 per cent.

Despite the strong annual growth, overall retail sales declined 6.48 per cent sequentially from July 2026, which had recorded a historic performance. The sequential moderation has been attributed to the seasonal monsoon lull and the shifting of key festival demand, including Ganesh Chaturthi and the spillover of Onam-led purchases, into September.

Another significant trend was the strong performance of non-farm rural demand. While a 13 per cent rainfall deficit kept tractor sales almost flat at 0.84 per cent growth, rural demand outpaced urban markets across other major segments.

Rural Passenger Vehicle sales increased 24.99 per cent, compared with 10.93 per cent growth in urban markets. Rural Commercial Vehicle sales grew 16.33 per cent, while Rural Three-Wheeler sales registered a 23.95 per cent increase.

Electric vehicle adoption also reached a new August high, with 2,98,448 EVs sold, representing a 52.9 per cent year-on-year increase and taking overall EV penetration to 12.3 per cent.

Looking ahead to the peak festive season from September to November, FADA maintained an optimistic outlook but cautioned manufacturers and dealers about inventory management. Passenger vehicle inventory currently stands at 38–40 days, considerably above the recommended 21-day level.

FADA President Sai Giridhar described August as the biggest-ever August for Indian auto retail and highlighted the growing preference for alternative powertrains.

He also pointed to the resilience of rural demand beyond agriculture, noting that non-farm rural activity in areas such as mobility, goods movement and construction continued to support automobile sales despite the rainfall deficit.

Giridhar urged passenger vehicle manufacturers to align billing with actual retail demand to prevent dealers from being burdened with ageing inventory, saying the key test would be showroom conversion during the September-November festive period.
