THANNAMANDI, Sep 2: The Department of Economics, Government Degree College Thannamandi, in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), organized a One-Day Workshop-cum-Awareness Programme on “Financial Literacy for Holistic Development” on Wednesday, under the patronage of College Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Shamim Ahmed Azad.

Prof. Pawan Kumar Gupta, SEBI-SMART, along with Associate Coordinator Rakesh Koul was resource person on the occasion.  Prof. Gupta delivered an informative and insightful session on various aspects of financial literacy. He sensitized the participants about financial planning, financial management, saving, investment and wealth creation. He emphasized the importance of developing a regular saving habit and making informed investment decisions according to one’s financial goals and risk-bearing capacity.

Prof. Gupta explained the impact of inflation on the purchasing power of money and elaborated on compound interest and annual returns. He explained how the power of compounding helps money multiply over time and highlighted the importance of starting investments early and reinvesting returns for long-term wealth creation.

He also provided an overview of various investment avenues, including securities markets, equity (Nifty 50), gold and real estate, and emphasized the importance of understanding risk before investing.

A significant part of the session focused on financial frauds and online scams. Participants were cautioned against fake investment applications, fraudulent trading platforms and deepfake-related scams. They were advised to remain vigilant and verify investment-related information through authentic SEBI sources.

During the programme, Dr. Nazakat Hussain also addressed the participants and threw light on investment, the stock market and the importance of financial literacy, further enriching the participants’ understanding of financial markets and responsible investment practices.

The programme was convened by Dr. Ather Aziz Raina, while the proceedings were conducted by Dr. Nagina Kousser. The programme was jointly coordinated by Dr. Ather Aziz Raina and Dr. Nagina Kousser, with the support of Associate Coordinator Mr. Rakesh Koul.

Prof. (Dr.) Shamim Ahmed Azad, Principal,delivered the Presidential Address and highlighted the growing importance of financial literacy in today’s rachanging economic environment.

The programme was attended by prominent members of the college fraternity, including Dr. Nazakat Hussain, Dr. Goher Iqbal, Dr. Junaid Ahmed, Dr. Nazar Ul Islam, Prof. Supriya Gupta, Dr.Gulshan Rashid Prof. Altaf Hussain, Prof. Fatima Parveen, Prof. Rumy Dar, Prof. Rizwana Kousar, Dr. Shazia Paswal, Prof. Yasmine Kouser and Dr. Meenakshi Sharma.

The programme proved to be highly informative and beneficial, enhancing financial awareness among the participants and encouraging them to adopt safe, informed and responsible financial practices.
