GDC Katra organises awareness lecture on Suicide Prevention and Mental Health

KATRA, Sep 25: Government Degree College (GDC) Katra, in collaboration with its NSS Unit, NCORD and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi College of Nursing (SMVDCON), organised an awareness lecture on “Suicide Prevention and Mental Health among College Students” to sensitise students about the importance of mental well-being, emotional resilience and timely intervention.

The programme was organised under the guidance of Principal Dr. Rajni Bhagat and aimed to create awareness about mental health concerns among young people while encouraging students to discuss psychological challenges without fear of stigma or discrimination.

During the lecture, resource persons highlighted the importance of recognising early warning signs associated with emotional distress, stress, anxiety and depression. Students were encouraged to seek timely professional assistance whenever they experience persistent emotional or psychological difficulties.

The speakers also discussed the importance of maintaining positive mental health, developing healthy coping mechanisms and building supportive relationships with peers. They emphasised the need for creating an empathetic and inclusive campus environment where students feel comfortable seeking support.

The resource persons stressed that suicide prevention requires collective efforts from students, educational institutions, families, healthcare professionals and the wider community. They underlined that compassion, understanding and timely intervention can play an important role in supporting individuals experiencing emotional distress.

Students were encouraged to break the silence surrounding mental health concerns and extend support to peers who may be going through difficult circumstances. The programme also highlighted the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and healthcare organisations in promoting mental wellness and strengthening suicide-prevention initiatives.

The initiative reflected the commitment of GDC Katra, its NSS Unit and the collaborating organisations towards creating a safe, supportive and mentally healthy environment for students.

The programme concluded with a message of hope, awareness and collective responsibility, urging students to prioritise their mental well-being and seek appropriate help whenever required.
