UDHAMPUR, May 21:   The Department of Sociology of Government College for Women (GCW) Udhampur organized an awareness lecture on the occasion of “Global Accessibility Awareness Day” on today, as part of its academic activities.

The programme was conducted under the guidance of the Principal of the College, Prof. (Dr.) Nalini Pathania.

The lecture was organized in collaboration with Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Jammu.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members, reflecting the growing awareness regarding accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. (Dr.) Nalini Pathania highlighted the importance of organizing such awareness activities to promote sensitivity and inclusivity in society. She encouraged students to contribute actively towards building an accessible and compassionate social environment where every individual is treated with dignity and equality.

Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Dr. Swati Dutt, who emphasized the need to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, as they continue to face challenges such as discrimination and inequality in education, employment, and social participation.

Delivering the expert talk, Dr. Rayees Shah spoke in detail about the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act, 2016. He explained how the Act promotes equality, protects the rights of persons with disabilities, and ensures their full participation in society. He further stressed the importance of creating an inclusive and supportive environment that guarantees equal opportunities for all.

The second speaker of the programme, Dr. Bishamber, elaborated on various types of disabilities and discussed how these disabilities often become barriers to education, employment, and accessibility.

Rahul Singh briefed the participants about the various schemes, training programmes, and courses available for persons with disabilities through CRC Jammu.

The programme was organized by Dr. Swati Dutt, Dr. Ravi Kumar, and Dr. Vijay Kumar. Among the faculty members present were Dr. Mool Raj, Prof. Swarna Devi, Dr. Ravinder Kumar, Prof. Rachna Bharti, Prof. Yash Paul, Dr. Sushma Kumari, Dr. Anita Kumari, Prof. Pooja Bharti and Prof. Yash Kumar.

The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Vijay Kumar, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, resource persons, faculty members, and students for their valuable presence and active participation. The programme proceedings were conducted by Manayata Saraswat (Semester IV) and Simran Rajput (Semester VI).
