JAMMU, Aug 21: The legendary Lal Chand Yamla, a shining star in the firmament of Punjabi music, has left an indelible mark on the industry. With a career spanning over four decades, Yamla ji’s contributions have been a gift to the world, his melodies echoing across borders and cultures.

A maestro of traditional Punjabi folk music, Yamla ji popularized iconic songs like Dulla Bhatti, Shahni Kaulan, and Puran Bhagat, and breathed life into the ancient instrument, the Tumbi. His debut recording with HMV in 1952 marked the beginning of a glorious journey, producing 11 timeless albums that continue to captivate audiences worldwide.

Yamla ji’s collaborations with the great Alam Lohar are still remembered fondly, a testament to his enduring friendship and artistic synergy. His achievements earned him prestigious accolades, including a Gold Medal from Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru in 1956 and a Lifetime Contribution Award in 1989 from the National Academy of Dance, Drama and Music, Delhi.

The world has taken notice of Yamla ji’s genius, with prominent artists like Panjabi MC sampling his music. Now, Friends Welfare Society in Jammu, urges the Narendra Modi Government to confer the Padmashree award upon Lal Chand Yamla posthumously, honouring his extraordinary contributions to Punjabi music. This recognition would bring boundless joy to his legion of fans and admirers worldwide.
