JAMMU, Sep 7: Jammu University Research Scholars Executive Association (JURSEA) Former President Dr. Vikas Sharma today appealed to students, scholars, research scholars and the university community to observe the death anniversary of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on a grand scale and pay tribute to his immense contribution to Jammu & Kashmir.
Dr. Sharma said Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was a historic leader who dedicated his life to the rights and welfare of the common people, particularly the poor and marginalized. His contribution to social reforms, democratic aspirations and the empowerment of ordinary people holds an important place in the history of Jammu & Kashmir.
“We must rise above political differences and remember Sheikh Abdullah for his lifelong commitment to the people. He never placed his personal interests above the welfare of society,” Dr. Sharma said.
He urged the younger generation to study Sheikh Abdullah’s life and political journey objectively and understand the struggles through which the people of Jammu & Kashmir sought social justice, equality, dignity and democratic participation.
Dr. Sharma further said that remembering the legacy of Sheikh Abdullah should also inspire society to continue working peacefully for democratic rights and the restoration of full statehood to Jammu & Kashmir.
“The restoration of statehood is not merely an administrative issue; it is closely linked with strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring greater accountability and representation of the people,” he said.
Calling upon the university community to organize seminars, lectures, discussions and other programmes, Dr. Sharma said that the best tribute to Sheikh Abdullah would be to understand his contribution and carry forward the values of social justice, democracy and public welfare.
“Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah devoted his life to Jammu & Kashmir and its people. Such a distinguished personality deserves to be remembered with dignity and respect, particularly by the younger generation,” Dr. Sharma added.
