Dr. Satwant urges J&K Government to initiate dialogue on Punjabi-language demands

JAMMU, Oct 11: Dr. Satwant Singh Rissam, Chairman of the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Memorial Trust, J&K, today urged the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to begin a timely and meaningful dialogue on the demands for Punjabi’s recognition and promotion.

Dr. Rissam said that continued delay in responding to public concerns could deepen disappointment, weaken trust and prolong the ongoing agitation. He called on the Government to involve representatives of Punjabi-speaking communities, educators, language experts, students, civil society and religious leaders who oversee religious institutions and community affairs in J&K.

“The Government should bring all relevant stakeholders to the table and listen to their concerns. The dialogue should address practical steps to promote Punjabi in education and public life, as well as the demand for official recognition,” he said.

He expressed concern that the issue was drawing attention beyond J&K and spreading to neighbouring states. He said that a timely, inclusive and constructive response would help address concerns locally and prevent further misunderstanding or escalation.

Dr. Rissam suggested that the Government designate a senior officer to coordinate the process, set a clear timeline for consultations and provide a written response to the recommendations. He appealed to all stakeholders to maintain peace and engage constructively, expressing hope that dialogue would lead to a respectful and lasting resolution.
