JAMMU, Sep 20: Mission Statehood Jammu Kashmir president Sunil Dimple led a protest rally along with a large number of traders against the proposed flyover projects at Bakshi Nagar and Amphalla-Janipur. During the protest, Dimple opposed the proposed construction and raised concerns over its possible impact on traders, residents and existing infrastructure in the old Jammu city areas.
Addressing the gathering, Dimple alleged that the government was expediting the process of obtaining No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from various departments, including sewerage and electricity authorities, for the proposed project. He claimed that elected representatives and other political leaders were approaching departments in connection with the required clearances and shifting of electricity infrastructure.
Dimple alleged that Jammu East MLA Yudhir Sethi was supporting the project and presenting a resolution concerning the Amphalla-Janipur flyover in the Assembly, citing traffic congestion and road-related problems. He appealed to the Chief Minister not to proceed with any resolution that would facilitate construction of the proposed flyover.
The protest leader also questioned what he described as the BJP’s position on the project. He alleged that while BJP leaders were criticizing the Jammu and Kashmir administration on various issues, they were simultaneously supporting the process for the flyover and seeking clearances from different departments.
Dimple demanded that the proposed project details, including the plan and blueprint, be placed in the public domain. He particularly sought clarification on how the authorities proposed to rehabilitate traders and residents who could be affected by the project. He claimed that thousands of shopkeepers and a large number of residential properties along the Janipur-High Court road could be affected by the proposed development.
He further alleged that the authorities were marking areas for road widening on both sides of the existing road in connection with the proposed flyover projects. Dimple said traders and residents of Bakshi Nagar, Amphalla, New Plot, Janipur, Roop Nagar and Bantalab were concerned about the proposed construction.
Calling for an alternative approach to decongest Jammu’s roads, Dimple demanded that the authorities examine the construction of a ring road connecting Amphalla-Manda with Janipur, High Court Road, Roop Nagar and Bantalab towards Akhnoor. He also advocated starting a metro rail connection from Amphalla-Manda towards Akhnoor as an alternative long-term solution for traffic management.
Dimple also demanded the resignation of BJP leaders whom he alleged were supporting the proposed flyover projects, naming Jugal Kishore Sharma, Sat Sharma, Yudhir Sethi and Arvind Gupta. He said his organization would continue to raise the concerns of traders and residents affected by the proposed infrastructure plans.
Official records show that the proposed elevated corridor is not merely at the discussion stage: the J&K Public Works Department issued a 2026 tender for an “Elevated corridor Flyover from Amphalla Chowk B.C. Road to Roop Nagar T Junction via Janipur.” The tender estimated the project value at ₹378.40 crore, with bids invited in June 2026.
Government records also show that the issue of utility shifting and widening of the Amphalla-Janipur/Janipur-High Court roads has been under consideration for several years. A 2019 government order constituted a committee to examine road widening and decongestion, including the shifting of utilities on the Janipur-High Court link road. The revised Jammu Master Plan-2032 also identifies Bakshi Nagar-Amphalla and Janipur-Amphalla among road stretches experiencing poor traffic conditions.
The protest was attended by Jagdish Raj Gupta, Happy Gupta, Raji Khajuria, Raj Kumar Gupta, Gulshan Gupta, Sonu Agarwal, Rahul Sharma, Shami Gupta, Rohit Gupta and presidents of various market unions, besides a large number of traders and residents.
