DC Jammu applauds Natrang’s Cultural initiatives and international contribution

JAMMU, Oct 26: District Development Commissioner Jammu, Minga Sherpa, IAS, lauded Natrang Jammu for its pioneering cultural initiatives aimed at celebrating the rich diversity of Jammu and Kashmir and bringing people together through the powerful medium of theatre and performing arts. He appreciated Natrang’s sustained efforts in preserving, promoting and projecting the region’s vibrant cultural heritage on national and international platforms.

Sherpa was speaking after witnessing Colours of Jammu Kashmir, the internationally acclaimed cultural presentation conceptualised and directed by Padma Shri Balwant Thakur, at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu. Expressing his admiration for the presentation, he recalled having witnessed the same cultural spectacle during the G20 celebrations in Srinagar, where it was showcased before an international audience on a much grander and spectacular scale.

Appreciating the artistic vision behind the production, Sherpa observed that such cultural presentations play a vital role not only in preserving and projecting regional identities but also in familiarising younger generations with their rich traditions, artistic expressions and cultural roots. He emphasised that Jammu and Kashmir’s cultural diversity is a precious heritage that deserves greater visibility and wider appreciation.

Drawing attention to the growing influence of social media and the increasing amount of time people spend scrolling through reels, Sherpa remarked that meaningful cultural engagements offer a valuable alternative, bringing people closer to their traditions while encouraging creativity, learning and a deeper appreciation of their own heritage. He expressed the desire that such high-quality cultural programmes should become a regular feature of Jammu’s cultural calendar, providing citizens, particularly young people, with more opportunities to experience the region’s artistic wealth.

Sherpa also commended Natrang’s remarkable contribution to taking theatre and the performing arts beyond geographical boundaries. He appreciated the organisation’s consistent efforts under the leadership of Balwant Thakur in presenting the cultural identity of Jammu and Kashmir before audiences across India and abroad, thereby creating greater international recognition for the region’s artistic traditions.

Colours of Jammu Kashmir is a vibrant celebration of the region’s pluralistic cultural identity, bringing together its diverse folk traditions, music, dance and distinctive cultural expressions in a compelling theatrical presentation. Through its artistic language, the production communicates the spirit of unity in diversity that defines Jammu and Kashmir.

On the occasion, Natrang Director Padma Shri Balwant Thakur felicitated Minga Sherpa on behalf of Natrang Jammu as a mark of respect and appreciation for his encouragement and recognition of the organisation’s cultural endeavours.

The occasion reaffirmed the importance of sustained institutional support and public participation in strengthening Jammu’s cultural landscape and inspiring future generations to remain connected with their artistic and cultural heritage.
