JAMMU, Jul 31: Senior BJP leader and former Minister Bali Bhagat has strongly condemned Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi over what he described as a “deeply disrespectful act” towards the Constitution during a recent protest, alleging that a copy of the Constitution was thrown on the ground. BJP leaders have publicly raised the issue, accusing Rahul Gandhi of showing disrespect to the Constitution during the demonstration.
Bali Bhagat said it was “highly unfortunate” that leaders who frequently claim to be the protectors of the Constitution were themselves accused of treating its symbolic copy with disrespect.
“The Constitution is not a political prop to be displayed for convenience and discarded the next moment. It is the supreme law of the land and deserves the highest respect from every citizen, especially from those holding constitutional positions,” Bhagat said.
He alleged that the Congress leadership has repeatedly attempted to portray itself as the guardian of constitutional values while indulging in actions that, according to him, undermine the dignity of democratic institutions.
Bhagat further stated that Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi owe an explanation to the people of India over the incident and should apologise if the allegations are found to be true. He said the country expects responsible conduct from political leaders, particularly in matters concerning national institutions and constitutional values.
“The people of India can clearly distinguish between genuine respect for the Constitution and political symbolism. Constitutional morality is reflected through conduct, not slogans or photo opportunities,” he added.
The senior BJP leader appealed to all political parties to rise above partisan politics and uphold the dignity and sanctity of the Constitution at all times, saying that no individual or political organisation is above the values enshrined in it.
