JAMMU, May 31: On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, the Indian Army organised a series of awareness programmes at Sindrha, Haribudha and Satharban in Jammu & Kashmir. The initiative aimed to educate troops and members of the local community about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and to promote healthy lifestyle choices, particularly among the youth.
The events witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, students and youth, fostering a spirit of unity and collective responsibility towards building a healthier society. The programme included awareness lectures, interactive sessions and discussions centred on anti-tobacco themes.
During the sessions, Army personnel highlighted the serious health hazards associated with tobacco use, including cancer, heart disease, respiratory illnesses and other life-threatening conditions. Emphasis was laid on the importance of making informed decisions and adopting a tobacco-free lifestyle. The programme also addressed the psychological, social and economic consequences of tobacco addiction, particularly its adverse impact on young minds.
The initiative reflected the Indian Army’s continued commitment not only towards ensuring national security but also towards nation-building and community development through public welfare and awareness activities. The programme concluded with all participants taking a pledge to stay away from tobacco and to encourage others to embrace healthy and productive lifestyles, thereby contributing towards a stronger and healthier nation.
