Army inaugurates cricket tournament for youth at Khawas

RAJOURI, Jun 30: The Indian Army inaugurated a cricket tournament for boys of Rajouri District at Government Higher Secondary School, Khawas, Kotranka. The tournament is being conducted from 29 June to 02 July 2026 with the aim of positively engaging local youth, promoting physical fitness, encouraging a healthy lifestyle and fostering sportsmanship among young participants. The opening match was played between Khawas Eleven Star and Lathi Warrior Team, setting an enthusiastic tone for the four-day competition. A total of eight teams from local schools and institutes are participating in the tournament, which is being played in T-10 format on a league-cum-knockout basis. The final match will also be played in the 10-over format for Under-19 youth of the local area.

The opening ceremony witnessed active participation and great enthusiasm from players, coaches and spectators. The players displayed discipline, teamwork and sporting spirit, while the encouragement of spectators added to the vibrant atmosphere. A total of 130 people, including 82 spectators and 48 players and team coaches, witnessed the event. The tournament seeks to strengthen cohesiveness among the youth of the region and further reinforce the cordial relationship between the local population and the Indian Army. The event also highlighted the importance of sports in channelising youthful energy in a positive direction, steering young minds away from drug abuse, unlawful activities and anti-social influences.

Local youth and residents expressed sincere gratitude to the Indian Army for organising the cricket tournament and for taking this meaningful initiative towards youth engagement, fitness and community development in the region.
