KISHTWAR, Jul 15: Senior National Conference leader and Chenab Valley spokesperson Ajeet Bhagat on Tuesday criticized the Centre over the delay in restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, describing it as the democratic right of the people of the Union Territory.
In a statement, Bhagat said the proposed protest in New Delhi seeking restoration of statehood would reflect the united aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and send a strong message to the Central Government to fulfil its commitment.
He alleged that the prolonged delay in restoring statehood has adversely affected governance and weakened democratic accountability. According to Bhagat, the existing administrative arrangement has failed to effectively address public concerns, while incidents of theft and fatalities in road accidents have increased, creating anxiety among the people.
The National Conference leader recalled the assurances given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the restoration of statehood. He said that despite nearly two years having passed since the elected government assumed office, the promise remains unfulfilled.
Referring to the Supreme Court’s observations on the issue, Bhagat urged the Prime Minister to introduce a bill for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
He appealed to the Centre to restore statehood without further delay, asserting that it would strengthen democratic institutions, improve governance, and accelerate the overall development of Jammu and Kashmir.
