R S PURA, Jun 25: Senior BJP leader and former Sarpanch Adv Devraj Sharma on Wednesday observed June 25 as a solemn reminder of one of the darkest periods in India’s democratic history, when the Emergency was imposed in 1975, curtailing fundamental rights, suppressing freedom of expression and weakening democratic institutions.
In a statement issued here, Adv Sharma said that the imposition of Emergency on June 25, 1975, marked a challenging phase for the nation, during which constitutional liberties and democratic principles came under severe strain. He said the day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals who stood firm in defence of democracy and civil liberties despite facing immense hardships.
Paying heartfelt tributes to all those who fought for the restoration of democracy, Adv Sharma said their courage, resilience and commitment to democratic values continue to inspire future generations. “The sacrifices of democracy defenders must never be forgotten. Their struggle ensured that the voice of the people ultimately prevailed and democratic institutions emerged stronger,” he remarked.
He emphasized that democracy is not merely a system of governance but a collective responsibility that requires constant vigilance, public participation and respect for constitutional values. “The preservation of democratic freedoms, fundamental rights and freedom of expression is the responsibility of every citizen. A vibrant democracy flourishes when people remain aware, active and committed to safeguarding its institutions,” he said.
Highlighting the role of youth, Adv Sharma urged young people to learn from history and actively contribute towards strengthening democratic traditions. He said awareness about constitutional rights and duties is essential for building a strong, inclusive and progressive nation.
“The younger generation must understand the significance of democratic values and the importance of protecting them. By remaining informed, responsible and engaged in public life, our youth can ensure that such challenges to democratic principles are never repeated,” he added.
Adv Sharma further said that remembering the Emergency is not about revisiting political differences but about reaffirming the nation’s commitment to democracy, transparency, accountability and the rule of law. He called upon citizens to honour the sacrifices of those who fought for democratic restoration by upholding the ideals enshrined in the Constitution.
Concluding his message, Adv Devraj Sharma said, “The protection of democracy is a shared responsibility. Let us draw inspiration from the sacrifices of democracy warriors and collectively work towards strengthening democratic institutions and constitutional values for generations to come.”
