JAMMU, Jun 16: Renowned Human Rights Activist Om Parkash Khajuria on Tuesday called upon the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference government to come clean before the people of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the implementation of the promises made during the Assembly election campaign.
In a strongly worded statement, Khajuria said that the government owes a clear and transparent account to the public on how many of its electoral commitments have been fulfilled since assuming office.
He asserted that democratic accountability demands that elected governments periodically inform citizens about the progress made on promises that formed the basis of their mandate.
Khajuria urged the National Conference government to place a detailed status report in the public domain, outlining which promises have been fulfilled, which are pending, and the reasons behind any delays. He further demanded that the government release a comprehensive roadmap specifying how and by when the remaining commitments would be implemented.
“The people of Jammu and Kashmir voted with hope and expectations. It is the responsibility of the government to maintain transparency and keep the public informed about the progress made on election promises. If certain commitments could not be fulfilled, the government must present a clear blueprint and timeline for their implementation,” Khajuria said.
The veteran rights activist also turned his attention to the opposition, stating that accountability should not be limited to the ruling party alone. He called upon BJP legislators across Jammu and Kashmir to honour the assurances they made to the electorate during the election campaign.
In particular, Khajuria referred to BJP MLA from RS Pura, Dr. Narinder Singh Raina, and recalled that during the election period assurances were reportedly given regarding relief to consumers facing mounting electricity bills. He questioned the status of those commitments and sought clarification on what concrete measures had been taken so far.
“Political leaders, irrespective of party affiliations, must remember that promises made during elections are not mere slogans but commitments made before the people. Citizens have every right to ask what action has been taken to fulfil those assurances,” Khajuria remarked.
He emphasized that public trust in democratic institutions can only be strengthened when governments and elected representatives remain answerable to the people and demonstrate sincerity in fulfilling their commitments.
Khajuria further said that transparency, accountability, and timely implementation of public welfare measures are essential for strengthening democratic governance and ensuring that the aspirations of the people are respected.
Calling for greater public engagement and regular performance reviews by elected representatives, he urged all political parties to rise above political considerations and focus on delivering tangible results for the welfare and development of Jammu and Kashmir.
