UNNAT NGO conducts HPV Vaccination Awareness Programme at GHSS Muthi

JAMMU, Jun 7: In an effort to promote awareness about cervical cancer prevention and the importance of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among adolescent girls, UNNAT NGO organized an awareness programme on “HPV Vaccination as an Important Intervention for Cervical Cancer Control Worldwide” at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Muthi.

The programme was attended by students, teachers, parents and community members. Principal of GHSS Muthi, Harpreet Kour, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

Presiding over the event, Neena Abrol, General Secretary of UNNAT NGO, emphasized the significance of preventive healthcare in protecting the health and future of young girls. She highlighted that cervical cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide despite being largely preventable through timely vaccination and regular health screening.

Addressing the gathering, Neena Abrol said that awareness regarding HPV vaccination is essential, particularly among adolescents and their families, as it can substantially reduce the risk of cervical cancer later in life. She noted that misinformation and lack of awareness often discourage families from availing preventive healthcare services and stressed the need for community-based awareness initiatives to bridge this gap.

The programme featured detailed presentations on Human Papillomavirus (HPV), its transmission, associated health risks and its strong link to cervical cancer. Resource persons explained that HPV infection is among the leading causes of cervical cancer and that vaccination at the recommended age provides effective protection against the most common cancer-causing strains of the virus.

Students were encouraged to discuss HPV vaccination with their parents and healthcare providers and were informed about the importance of receiving the vaccine before exposure to the virus. Speakers also highlighted the role of personal hygiene, healthy lifestyle practices and regular health check-ups in reducing cancer risks and promoting overall well-being.

An interactive question-and-answer session was held during which students actively participated and sought clarification on various aspects of HPV vaccination, cervical cancer prevention and adolescent health.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal Harpreet Kour appreciated the efforts of UNNAT NGO for organizing the informative programme. She emphasized that educating adolescent girls about preventive healthcare is essential for building a healthy and informed society. She encouraged students to share the knowledge gained during the programme with their families and peers and assured full support for future health awareness initiatives.
