VIJAYPUR, Sep 28: The Congress on Monday staged a protest at the Vijaypur BDO Block over alleged irregularities in the electoral process and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The demonstration was led by former minister Yashpal Kundal, with Congress workers raising slogans against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and burning his effigy.
The protest was attended by Samba district in-charge Indu Pawar, Babal Gupta, Rajesh Sharma and a large number of party workers.
Addressing the gathering, Kundal alleged that electoral rolls were being manipulated under the SIR exercise. He claimed that the Election Commission was acting at the direction of the BJP and alleged that opposition voters were being removed while bogus votes were being added.
Kundal demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleged that such actions could undermine the democratic electoral process. He described the alleged manipulation of electoral rolls as an attempt at “vote theft” and called for greater scrutiny of the revision process.
The Congress leader also levelled allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, questioning their alleged role in the electoral system. He questioned how free and fair elections could be ensured if electoral rolls were not accurate and transparent.
The Congress said it would continue to raise concerns regarding what it described as irregularities in the electoral process. The protesters called for greater transparency, accountability and proper verification during the preparation and revision of electoral rolls.
The allegations made during the protest are claims by the Congress and were not independently established in the statement. The demonstration concluded with the party reiterating its demand for transparency in the SIR process and greater public confidence in the electoral-roll revision exercise.
