Guru illuminates the heart, dispels inner darkness: Sadguru Madhuparamhans Ji Maharaj

RANJDI, Sep 26: On the occasion of the full moon, Sadguru Shri Madhuparamhans Ji Maharaj of Sahib Bandgi, while addressing devotees at Ranjdi, emphasised the importance of a Guru in purifying the human heart and dispelling inner ignorance.

In his discourse, Sadguru Madhuparamhans Ji Maharaj explained that the purification of the heart is not merely a physical or emotional process but, in the spiritual sense, involves removing the darkness of ignorance. He said that a person cannot properly distinguish between right and wrong when surrounded by inner darkness, just as one cannot see or move safely in complete physical darkness.

Referring to the importance of reasoning and reflection, he cited the example of scientist Isaac Newton and his scientific observations. He said that, similarly, the teachings of the saints invite seekers to listen, reflect and understand their deeper meaning rather than accepting words without contemplation.

The Sadguru also spoke about the traditional importance of the Guru in spiritual life, referring to figures such as Lord Ram and sages who, according to the spiritual traditions being discussed, accepted guidance from a Guru. He said that the presence of a Guru provides spiritual direction and helps a seeker understand the nature of the self and the Divine.

Explaining the concept of the heart, he distinguished the spiritual understanding of the heart from its purely physical interpretation. According to his discourse, the mind and the heart have different roles. He explained that while the mind processes thoughts and experiences, the heart, in the spiritual sense, is associated with the soul, impressions (samskaras) and deeper aspects of one’s inner being.

He further explained the concept through the traditional understanding of Pranas or vital forces. According to the discourse, Prana Vayu has an important connection with the heart and sustains the body’s vital functions. He also referred to the Antahkarana, describing it as the deeper inner faculty that retains impressions beyond the immediate experiences recognised by the conscious mind.

The Sadguru said that thoughts generated by the mind influence human actions, while the heart’s tendency to accept these impulses can lead a person towards confusion. The spiritual role of the Guru, he explained, is to help a person develop the ability to examine these impulses and distinguish between what is right and wrong.

Quoting the spiritual teaching that the Guru illuminates the place where even the sun, moon, stars and fire cannot provide light, he said that this illumination represents the removal of inner ignorance. Once this inner awareness develops, a person is able to exercise greater discrimination instead of simply following every thought or impulse.

He concluded that purification of the heart, in the spiritual sense, means the removal of ignorance and the awakening of inner discernment, and that the Guru plays a central role in guiding the seeker towards this awareness.
