GDC Thannamandi organises awareness campaign on early identification of drug abuse

THANNAMANDI, Sep 18: Government Degree College (GDC) Thannamandi organised an awareness campaign on “Early Identification of Drug Use and Timely Intervention” on the college premises and in the college canteen area as part of the ongoing series of activities under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA).

The programme was organised under the patronage of Prof. (Dr.) Shamim Ahmed Azad, Principal, GDC Thannamandi, and conducted under the guidance of Dr. Ather Aziz Raina, Convener, Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

The main speaker, Dr. Nagina Kousser, interacted with students and sensitised them about the importance of recognising the early warning signs of drug use and taking timely preventive action. She highlighted behavioural changes such as erratic behaviour, increased secrecy, hiding things, avoiding eye contact and becoming defensive when asked simple questions.

Dr. Nagina Kousser further explained that sudden and unexplained mood changes, including extreme happiness followed by depression or irritability, may also require attention. She also highlighted other possible warning signs, including neglect of academic and personal responsibilities, irregular attendance, declining academic performance, withdrawal from family or social activities, poor personal hygiene and unusual smells.

Emphasising the importance of early intervention, she stated that recognising warning signs at an early stage, maintaining supportive communication and providing timely assistance can help prevent substance use from developing into more serious and long-term consequences.

Prof. Rizwana Kousser elaborated on symptoms associated with anxiety and depression. She explained the importance of understanding the differences between these conditions and recognising situations in which students may require appropriate emotional and professional support.

Dr. Meenakshi Sharma highlighted preventive measures and stressed the importance of addressing substance use at an early stage. She encouraged students to adopt healthy lifestyles, seek support whenever required and contribute towards creating a drug-free educational environment.

An interactive discussion was also held between the students and members of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan Committee. Students actively participated in the session and raised questions concerning the early detection of drug use, appropriate intervention, peer support and ways to protect young people and society from substance abuse.

The programme witnessed the active participation of prominent members of the committee, including Prof. Rumy Dar, Prof. Yasmeen Kousser and Dr. Shazia Paswal.

The awareness campaign reinforced the message that early identification, timely support, responsible communication and collective community participation are essential for preventing substance abuse and building a healthy and drug-free society.
