Max Hospital Mohali manages life-threatening emergency with minimally invasive surgery

JAMMU / CHANDIGARH, Jul 16: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, successfully treated a 36-year-old patient with a life-threatening medical emergency using a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure. The procedure helped the patient to recover faster with significantly less postoperative pain and no wound-related complications, said Dr. Anupam Goel, principal consultant–general, gastro-intestinal & robotic surgery.

The patient was rushed to Max with complaints of severe abdominal swelling and pain, repeated vomiting, and high-grade fever. He was diagnosed with a duodenal perforation—a hole in the upper part of the small intestine that can rapidly lead to severe infection and sepsis if left untreated.

Led by Dr. Goel, the team successfully performed a laparoscopic repair using the Modified Graham’s Patch technique, a surgery in which the perforation is sealed using a small piece of the body’s own tissue (omentum) to repair the hole and prevent further leakage, through a few small keyhole incisions, avoiding a large surgical cut and enabling a faster recovery.

Dr. Goel, said, “This condition was a surgical emergency and required immediate treatment. With advanced minimally invasive techniques, we were able to treat many such complex abdominal emergencies with less pain, fewer complications, and a quicker recovery compared to traditional open surgery.”

The patient recovered well after surgery and was discharged in stable condition after observation for 7 days.
