Life remains disrupted in J&K despite improvement in weather, Snow avalanche hits near Zojila pass

JAMMU, Jan 11: Life remained disrupted in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir despite improvement of weather conditions, even as Snow avalanche hit zojila pass in Drass area of Ladakh region today, officials said here.
Many roads continue to remain closed in some districts of Kashmir valley and some areas of Jammu region due to accumulation of snow due to continued snowfall in past few days, they said , adding however Jammu-Srinagar national highway opened today for vehicular traffic.
Due to accumulation of snow on the roads people in many areas could not make free movement ,especially in snow bound areas of Kashmir,Jammu and Ladakh forcing them to stay at homes.
Kashmir valley and Ladakh continued to reel under sub zero temperature with famous resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam recording a low temperature of minus 10.6 degrees celecius and 10.4 degrees celecius respectively today.
Metrological department said that except Sringar , mercury dropped in entire valley with the summer capital of Srinagar of J&K recording a low of 0.2 degrees celecius which was same as previous night .It was 2.1 degrees above normal for this time of the year in Srinagar.
Kashmir is presently under the grip of 40 day long harshest period of winter , known locally as “Chilla-i-Kalan” which started from December 21.It is followed by a 20-day longt “Chilla-i-Khurd” and ten -day long “Chilla-i-Bacha”.
Jammu recorded a low of 6.2 degrees celecius against previous night’s9.7 degrees celecius which is minus below normal for the J&K winter capital during this time of the year.
Ladakh reorded a low of minus 12.9 degrees celecius against lst night’s 9.5 degrees celecius , whil;e Kargil swttled at minus 11.3 degrees celecius.
The MET department has forecasr dry weather at most places in J&K till January 16.There would be gradual rise in day temperature and fall in night temperature. The MET department also urged people putting up in snowbound areas to be wary of avalanches.
Meanwhile reports from Ladakh said that snow avalanches hit near Zojila pass. However there was no loss of life or damage to property.
The snow avalanche hit Ranga Morh near Zojila pass in Drass district of Ladakh today, the reports added.
