LEH, Feb 19: President District Congress Committee (DCC) Leh, Tsering Namgyal slammed BJP Leh President, Dorje Angchok for allegedly misusing the stage arranged by Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) to take political mileage which was otherwise meant for demanding constitutional safeguards for the Union Territory of Ladakh in one voice by all stakeholders.
While addressing a press conference, Namgyal said that misuse of LBA stage by BJP is unacceptable. He also accused President BJP for making statements regarding different constitutional safeguards and their assumed disadvantages for Ladakh, thereby spreading confusion among people. He reiterated that only sixth schedule of the Constitution is the most appropriate constitutional safeguard for Ladakh UT.
Namgyal reminded that sixth schedule for Ladakh has already been recommended to Home Ministry by the National Commission for Schedule Tribe. “Chairmen of LAHDC Leh and Kargil along with Member Parliament have also written to the Government of India on October 29 last year, requesting the Government to bring Ladakh under ambit of Schedule Sixth,” he said, adding that experts and students, who visited various areas under sixth schedule to study constitutional safeguards, have also found the provisions under sixth schedule most appropriate constitutional safeguards to protect indigenous rights of people of Ladakh.
Earlier on Monday, religious and political leaders from Leh sent a joint memorandum to the Prime Minister demanding land protection, employment and job reservations, protection and preservation of culture, language and ethnicity of Ladakh, protection of fragile eco-system, protection of interests of business community, strengthening, empowerment/ re-organisation and delimitation of LAHDC, separate Rajya Sabha seat for Ladakh, complete tax exemption, establishment of High Court in Union Territory of Ladakh, inclusion of Bhoti language in the VIII-schedule of Indian Constitution, caderisation of employees, establishment of Ladakh Public Service Commission, establishment of Minority Commission, protection of citizenship of people and promotion of agriculture sector in the region.
