Army rescues precious lives from Poonch river

JAMMU, Jul 28 : Army has rescued five persons trapped in flash floods from a river in Jhulas area of Poonch district, while a wooden bridge washed away after heavy rains in Kishtwar district, and the administration in Reasi district imposed section 144 near Chenab river after its level crossed danger mark due to incessant rains.
In a daring rescue operation, the Army in coordination with SDRF and J&K police rescued four precious lives at Jhulas in Poonch district last night, officials said here today.
Army swiftly responded to a critical situation in which four youth were trapped in the Poonch river flash flood due to incessant rain in the region, they said, adding with the help of SDRP and police officials all the four were pulled out of the gushing waters safely.
Reports from the hilly district of Kishtwar said that a bridge over Marsuddar rive collapsed under the weight of the rushing stream after heavy rainfall caused flooding in Choudraman village.
The bridge, connecting the village to Afti-the tehsil headquarters of Warwan, was washed away after heavy rains for three to four days, the reports said.
The water level in the Chenab river crossed the danger mark of 35 feet due to incessant rains forcing the district authorities of Reasi to impose section 144 near the Chenab river, other rivers, and rivulets in the district.
The Additional District Magistrate in an order said that it is felt necessary to impose restrictions on venturing out of the public on hilly and landslide/mudslide prone areas and visiting/taking baths/taking cattle at the river Chenab and other rivers/rivulets of the district to avoid any untoward incident.
Police in the district has established an ‘emergency helpline’ in view of the inclement weather today to facilitate the general public and to avoid any untoward incident.
People are requested to contact the helpline numbers in case of any emergency-related present weather conditions or any distress, especially in far-flung areas, the district police officials said.
A number of places around Jammu city got inundated with water due to incessant rains since Yesterday.
There are also some reports of damage caused by the rains. One of the reports said that some schools and houses were submerged in rainwater in low-line areas. In Udhaywala area, the authorities rescued students and staff of the Government school.
Meanwhile, the Divisional Commissioner, Jammu also issued an advisory for inclement weather in the region.
In view of the inclement weather, the people are requested to stay away from the rivers, canals, and other water bodies, it said, adding that if there is any other issue, contact the administrator.
